VENICE
ISLANDS
by Natalie Roberts
|
Today
we went to the Venetian Islands. We arrived at Montebelluna
train station with our host students at 10 past 8 and left on
the train at 8.26. The trip took about 1 and half hours.
When
we arrived in Venezia we got on a boat that took us around the
islands.
The
first island we went to was Murano. There we saw glass making
and bought glass souvenirs. While we were there they were
making a chandelier. When we were finished looking we went
into the shop. |
Everything
they had was hand made. The people in the shop gave us all a 50% off
– I think they regretted that!
Everything in the shop was beautiful, some of the things people
bought were figurines, plates, perfume bottles and jewellery.
The
next island we went to was Burano; it had lots of colourful houses.
We were able to go for a walk and look around. All the shop there
sold lace, masks and glass.
We
hopped back on the boat and it took us to Torcello Island. This
island has the oldest building in Venice on it: a church built in
639 AD. Before we looked in the church we ate lunch on the grass.
Inside
the church were tombs of saints and bishops; on the walls were two
Byzantine mosaics that went from about halfway up the wall to the
ceiling. The Last Judgement mosaics showed stories that scared
people into being good so they would go to heaven and not hell.
On this island I had my first public toilet experience, which cost
me 50 eurocents ($ AUS 1).
The
last island we went to was the actual island of Venice, where we
started.
We visited St. Mark’s square, which us Australians found out has
lots of pigeons, just like in the movies.
After
this we started walking back to the train station. On the way we
crossed over one of the two bridges that go over the Grand Canal and
we saw the Jewish ghetto.
Finally
we arrived at the train station – by this time many people has
sore feet! We had ten minutes to eat and then we got on the train to
go home. It was a fun day!
Hi
family, love you, miss you! X X X X X X X
